IOM joined the United Nations system in September 2016.

Pär Liljert (Sweden) is the Director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Office to the United Nations in New York. Prior to taking up his current post, he was the Chief of Mission for IOM Australia and Regional Coordinator for the Pacific. Mr. Liljert served (from 2011 – 2018) as IOM’s Special Envoy and Chief of Mission in the People's Republic of China, Chief of Mission in Tanzania (2007 – 2011) and Chief of Mission in Zambia (2002 – 2004) and played an important role in establishing IOM’s Africa Capacity Building Center (ACBC) in Tanzania.
